Western and Southern Open 2019: Semifinals Recap

Semifinal action took place today at the Linder Family Tennis Center. Four women and four men competing for two spots each in the finals on Sunday afternoon.

The day started with women's world #2 Ashleigh Barty taking on long time tour veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova. This match went very quick as Barty could not get anything going. Early in the second set, Barty called for a trainer suffering what appeared to be an ankle injury. Kuznetsova would prove to be too much for the Australian, and would take the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Next up the men took Center Court as Frenchman Richard Gasquet took on Belgian David Goffin. Gasquet was coming off of a three set marathon the day before, while Goffin advanced to the semifinal when Yoshihito Nishioka withdrew due to food poisoning. From the start it was clear the Frenchman was feeling the effects of the prior day. Never mounting much offense Gasquet fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

The third match of the order saw a battle of two Americans. The 16 seed Madison Keys took on Sofia Kenin, after an hour rain delay. The match was back and forth with Keys pulling off the win in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

The day concluded with defending Western and Southern Open Champion Novak Djokovic facing Daniil Medvedev. Djokovic rolled through the first set without much issue. The key moment came in the second set, when tied at 3-3, Medvedev decided to abandon his traditional slower second serve and try to over power Djokovic. It worked and he continued this strategy for the rest of the match, knocking off the defending champion in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Medvedev will advance to his 3rd final in 3 weeks, and seek his first title in the same time frame. He previously lost to Nick Kyrgios in Washington D.C. at the Citi Open, and last Sunday fell to Rafael Nadal in Montreal in the Rodgers Cup.

Finals Schedule for tomorrow.
