Western and Southern Open 2019

Action is set to begin at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio on Monday.

Saturday and Sunday saw men and women attempt to qualify for the main field in this year's tournament. Two local players were in action during qualifiers as Cincinnati's John McNally and JJ Wolf both attempted to make the main draw. McNally came up short in day 1 of qualifiers falling to Argentinian Federico Delbonis 6-3, 0-6, 2-6. JJ Wolf fared a little better defeating the Russian Alexander Bublik in round 1 of qualifiers. Ultimately though JJ's efforts would fall short in the second round of qualifiers losing to Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta 3-6, 6-4, 2-6.

Now with the field set we look on to the main draw, which began on Sunday. Alex de Minaur of Australia defeated Marco Cecchinato of Italy. De Minaur will move on to play the winner of the Opelka/Coric match. In the night session, American John Isner defeated Serbian Dusan Lajovic to advance to the second round. He'll play the winner Simon/Carreno-Busta.

Action will continue on Monday. Another local play in Cincinnati's Caty McNally will open up Center Court against the Belgian Elise Mertens. That match begins at 11 am. Following that match will be tour veteran Venus Williams against fellow American Lauren Davis. The winner of that match will get defending Western and Southern Open Champion Kiki Bertens in the second round.

Also on Center Court, will be one of the interesting stories of the tournament. Following Venus v Davis, Andy Murray will be making his return to singles action facing off against the Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Murray was believed to be retiring following this years Wimbledon due to a hip injury. Murray announced that he had hip resurfacing surgery, a procedure that had helped other players return to the court, and will play his first singles match since the Australian Open in January.

Other matches to check out: In the night session Nick Kyrgios will face off against Lorenzo Sonego on the Grandstand Court. Caroline Wozniacki will play Dayana Yastremska immediately after Kyrgios/Sonego. In a battle of wild cards, Maria Sharapova will play Alison Riske on Center Court. Finally over on Court 4, Mike and Bob, the Bryan Brothers are back together in doubles action taking on a pair of Frenchmen in Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin.
