Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided a restaurant owned by Geoff Tracy, the husband of CBS News senior correspondent and former anchor Norah O'Donnell, on Tuesday (May 6), FOX 5 DC reports.
Chef Geoff's, which has multiple locations in the Washington, D.C., area, was among several restaurants targeted by federal agents during a crackdown on illegal migrants on Tuesday. Nearly a dozen ICE and law enforcement agents were present at the eatery's New Mexico Avenue location at around 10:30 a.m. and spent about 90 minutes asking to see employees' I-9 forms, which are used to verify whether a person is permitted to work in the United States.
No arrests were made during the raid at Chef Geoff's on Tuesday, according to Shawn Townsend, President of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, who expressed concern about raids targeting local restaurants.
"There was no one detained or arrested that I've heard of but regardless of that fact, disrupting food service during lunch hours while restaurants are open is alarming, and we are concerned about the fear-mongering tactics we believe happened today," Townsend told FOX 5 DC. "There is a sense of fear. It's alarming, it's concerning, immigrants make up a large amount of workers in our restaurants in the district. I think there could have been a better way to get the information that these ICE agents, from what I'm told, were looking for."
O'Donnell had previously worked as an anchor for CBS Evening News before transitioning to her role as a senior correspondent after the 2024 presidential election. The veteran journalist took over as the CBS Evening News anchor in 2019 and re-signed with the network in 2022 amid prior speculation of her future with the company.
